Hookah Starter Guide for Beginners

A good hookah session comes down to three things: a loosely packed bowl, properly lit coals and steady heat. This guide covers the gear you need and the routine our customers use at home.
What you need
- A hookah: base (the water bottle), stem, hose and a tray for spent coals.
- A bowl. Clay or silicone bowls are the easiest to start with.
- Shisha (flavored hookah tobacco), such as Al Fakher.
- Coals: natural coconut coals or quick-light coals.
- Heat management: a heat management device, or foil with small holes.
- Tongs, and a coal burner or electric coal starter if you use natural coals.
Step by step
- Fill the base with cold water until the stem sits about an inch below the surface.
- Fluff the shisha and sprinkle it into the bowl loosely, just below the rim. Do not press it down; a tight bowl burns fast and tastes harsh.
- Cover the bowl with foil (poke 15–20 small holes) or set a heat management device on top.
- Light the coals. Natural coals take about 8–10 minutes on a burner, until they are glowing orange all over. Quick-light coals light in under a minute but can add a slight taste.
- Place 2–3 coals around the edge, not the center. Give it 3–5 minutes to heat up before you start.
- If it gets harsh, move a coal off or tip the ash off. If the smoke is thin, add a coal or move them inward.
Safety
- Light and use coals only in a well ventilated space. Burning coals give off carbon monoxide.
- Never leave lit coals unattended, and put spent coals in a metal container to cool.
- Hookah smoke contains tobacco and nicotine. Keep it away from kids and pets.
Cleaning after a session
Empty the water after every use. Rinse the base, stem and bowl with warm water and a hookah brush; skip soap on clay bowls. Let every part dry before the next session. Rinse a washable hose and hang it to dry; do not wash a leather or non-washable hose.
