Rolling Papers, Cones and Wraps: Which to Buy
Updated 2026-11-03 · 4 min read
The papers aisle is mostly the same few choices in different packaging: size, material, and whether you roll it yourself. Here is how to tell them apart.
Paper sizes
- Single wide: about 70 mm long, the classic size for a thin roll.
- 1¼: about 78 mm, the most popular everyday size.
- 1½: a little wider than 1¼ for a fuller roll.
- King size and king size slim: about 110 mm long. Slim versions are narrower for a tidier roll.
Materials
- Unbleached (brown) papers skip the whitening step and have a slightly natural taste.
- Hemp and flax papers are a little thicker and easier to handle for beginners.
- Rice papers are very thin and burn slowly, but take practice to roll.
- Classic white wood pulp papers are the most common and burn evenly.
Cones
Cones come pre-rolled with a filter tip already in place. You fill and pack them from the open end, so there is no rolling. They come in the same lengths as papers and in packs from a few to dozens.
Wraps
Hemp wraps are made from hemp and contain no tobacco. Leaf wraps and cigarillo-style wraps are made from tobacco leaf, so they contain nicotine and are sold as tobacco products.
If you want to avoid tobacco, check the pack: it will say tobacco-free or list hemp as the material.
