How to Clean a Glass Pipe
Updated 2026-11-03 · 3 min read
A clean pipe tastes better and draws easier. The method most people use takes about 15 minutes and costs almost nothing.
What you need
- Isopropyl alcohol, 91% or stronger, from any pharmacy.
- Coarse salt (kosher or rock salt). It works as the scrubber.
- A zip-top bag or a container with a lid.
- Pipe cleaners or cotton swabs for the tight spots.
Step by step
- Let the pipe cool completely, and tap out any loose ash.
- Put it in the bag, pour in enough alcohol to cover it, and add a couple of spoonfuls of salt.
- Seal the bag and shake gently for a few minutes. Let it soak 10–20 minutes for heavy buildup, then shake again.
- Use a pipe cleaner or swab on the bowl and mouthpiece.
- Rinse well with warm (not hot) water until there is no alcohol smell, and let it dry fully.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not pour boiling water on glass or move it from cold to hot quickly. Sudden temperature changes can crack it.
- Do not use alcohol near an open flame, and let the pipe dry completely before you use it again.
- Skip metal tools that can scratch or chip the glass.
How often
A quick rinse every few uses keeps buildup from hardening, and a full clean once a week is plenty for most people. Screens are cheap; swap them when they clog.
